Potassium Sulfide Formula

Potassium sulfide formula is K2S. It is an inorganic compound. It rapidly reacts with water and forms potassium hydroxide and potassium bisulfide. Its other names are dipotassium sulfide or dipotassium monosulfide. It is used in black powder. Potassium sulfide formula is used in fireworks.  This potassium sulfide is highly flammable and rapidly burns when come in contact with air. It can also cause explosion when in contact with acid or water. It is also harmful and causes irritation when comes in contact with eye or skin.

Potassium sulfide formula is formed two potassium ions form bond with one atom of sulphur. This compound has melting point of about 840 degree centigrade. This compound decomposes on further heating and do not show any type of boiling. Potassium sulfide formula is soluble in ethanol, water and glycerol. It has crystal structure of antiforate. Potassium sulfide is very dangerous because it causes explosion when in contact with air. These are highly used in fireworks as it speeds up the burning procedure. This is also toxic because it produces toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide and sulphur dioxide. Inhalation of large amount of these gases will cause death of person.

Potassium sulfide formula is formed when gun powder is burned. Sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrates are used in for making black powder or gun powder.  On burning this gun powder produces various gases and solid residue known as potassium sulfide. These black powders are generally used as agents to produce force for bullets to fire. On rapid burning this powder produces such strength that it propels bullet in air for strike. Now days this black powder is not used for propelling bullets. Smokeless propellants are used nowadays. Since these form explosion in contact with air sulfide formula should be packed in air tight containers.

Potassium Sulfide Formula

Precaution should always be followed to avoid any kind of accident while handling such dangerous chemical. You should store it away from acids and oxidants. It is mandatory for suppliers to pack it in fire proof containers. Potassium formula is very harmful to aquatic animals. This compound is colorless in appearance when in pure form but appears yellow or brown when it is impure. Potassium sulfide should be transported with care.
